The Rhythm Garden

A full, whimsical-illustrative direction for the child-facing app, where every reward is a memory of real practice — a plant that grew because a piece was tended, a spot smoothed, a few minutes spent. The garden never wilts, never scores, never sells. Built on one shared garden.css system so all 24 screens feel like one place. Open any frame to view it full-size.

System · garden.css (Quicksand + Nunito Sans) Device · 390×844 portrait · 844×390 landscape Invariants · participation · anti-fail-state · one take · teacher refs · no currency

First run

Guardian

Two light setup steps. Connecting a teacher is skippable — a child gets a real garden with no teacher yet.

Sign in with Apple; email is the calm fallback.
One field, minimal PII — no last name, no birthday.
Join code → confirm the studio. Skippable.

The daily loop

Child

Today invites the child into the studio; Pieces is the repertoire, each at its own stage of growth; Rhythm is the Growing Year. Tabs: Today · Pieces · Rhythm · Family.

Three beds waiting in the sun; one primary — open the studio.
Pull-down under the avatar — effort status, never a grade.
The repertoire garden + a door to the Conservatory.
Spots, teacher demos, the week's takes.
Mastered pieces become permanent Melody Trees.
Signature
The Growing Year — streak vine + weekly garden.

Studio session

Child · landscape

A grown-up-operated deck of pieces: listen first in the sunlight, smooth a spot as a plant grows, then water today's garden and reflect on effort.

Listen-first · the spot rep-counter is a growing plant.
Signature
The session-complete reward — a memory, not a coin.
Signature
Effort (RPE), framed as weather — never quality.

Recordings — the harvest

Guardian

Voice-redacted-on-device takes the guardian reviews and, with consent, shares for the teacher to listen to. Never scored, never analyzed server-side.

The harvest, grouped by piece; voice muted + sync state.
Listen → confirm no voice → share. Revocable.

Progress & history

Child & guardian

How the garden grew over time — all participation. The calendar reimagines the contribution heatmap as an isometric garden bed.

Window tallies + a sprout bar chart.
Tilled soil · sprout · bloom · a golden streak vine.
Signature
What grew that day — minutes, pieces, effort.

Family & account

Guardian

Profiles, the connected teacher, co-guardians, and privacy. The guardian holds the account and the consent.

Children, the harvest, grown-ups, the teacher.
The multi-child chooser.
Photo + name; the action sheet to add a photo.
Share a co-guardian invite.
The co-guardian hand-off, from a link.
Daily sun (goals), gentle reminders, consent.

Quiet states

Anti-fail-state

The hardest test of the design language: a first-run garden with no teacher, and an offline day. Both stay calm and alive — never red, never behind.

No teacher yet — plant something anyway.
Roots keep growing; work waters the teacher's view later.
How it maps to the product. This is the Prelude chrome from the dual-flavor plan — a client-side translation of the very same signals the app already tracks (minutes, a piece practised, a spot smoothed, a session committed). No garden field, no flavor field, ever reaches a DTO or the teacher CRM. Growth is a memory of real work; a quiet week is a dormant garden, not a punished one.
